The following resources may be helpful with identifying free, low-cost, or licensed alternatives to high-cost course materials.

Open Educational Resources

  • Academic Commons: Community of faculty, academic technologists, librarians, administrators, and other academic professionals who collectively have create this comprehensive web resource focused on liberal arts education via free digital tools
  • Community College Consortium for Open Educational Resources: Collection of open-access resources for the creation of textbook alternatives, in addition to open content repositories and developmental tools; offers access to more than five hundred open texbooks as well as a guide to creating and implementing your own
  • Connexions: Contains educational materials for children, college students, and professionals organized in small modules that can be connected into larger collections or courses; all content free for use and reuse under the Creative Commons attribution license
  • MedEdPORTAL: Free online peer-reviewed publication service of the American Association of Medical Colleges; contains medical resources including teaching materials, assessment tools, and faculty development that users can to download and utilize
  • MERLOT: Collection of open, peer-reviewed, online learning materials for faculty and students of higher education
  • NanoHUB: Open teaching and learning resources in nanotechnology, including online presentations, course material, learning modules, podcasts, and simulation tools; created by the Network for Computational Nanotechnology
  • Open Courseware Consortium: Free, open, digital educational materials organized as courses; a collaboration of higher education institutions and associated organizations from around the world creating a broad, deep body of open educational content using a shared model
  • SmARThistory: Free online art history education resources, including multimedia content; presented by the Khan Academy
  • WikiEducator: Online community for planning education projects linked with the development of free content

  • AcademicPub: Enables instructors to create customized textbooks with book chapters, case studies, journal articles, and instructor-created content; offers purchase options including digital and print
  • Flat World Knowledge: Peer-reviewed college textbooks available for purchase in digital and print formats
  • Global Text Project: Free library of thousands of texts on subjects covered in a university undergraduate program; instructors can open and modify individual book chapters as needed; joint venture between the Terry College of Business of the University of Georgia and the Daniels College of Business of the University of Denver
  • InTech: Multidisciplinary open-access publisher of books and journals covering science, technology, and medicine; has published more than two thousand open-access books and provides support services for faculty who want to publish an open-access book or journal
  • OER Commons: Contains hundreds of college-level open textbooks, lectures, and other resources from higher education institutions around the world; created by the Institute for the Study of Knowledge Management in Education
  • Ohio Digital Bookshelf Project: Pilot project for the Ohio Textbook HQ to provide inexpensive higher-education textbooks
