What's New in the Music Library

Spring 2013

Free Concert by Piano Spheres. May 4, 2013.

A free concert by Piano Spheres, one of LA's most important organizations for new and contemporary music, will take place May 4, 2013 at 8:00 PM in Schoenberg Auditorium.

The program includes Colin McPhee's Balinese Ceremonial Music, the Stravinsky Piano Sonata, and a rare performance of an arrangement for two pianos eight hands of the Prelude to Gurrelieder by Schoenberg, the arrangement by Anton Webern. Piano Sphere's artists Gloria Cheng, Vicki Ray, Mark Robson, and Susan Svrcek will perform these and other works by Ferruccio Busoni, John Harbison and Henri Dutilleux.

With funding from the Hugo Davise Fund for Contemporary Music the Music Library is able to sponsor this free concert by Piano Spheres.

Music Library Midday Concert Series. We are pleased to present String Quartets of Mozart and Dvorak with Ambroise Aubrun, Eriko Tsuji, Din Sung, and Hillary Smith on Monday, November 14th, 12:15 PM.  Feel free to bring your lunch!

The Music Library is pleased to offer an opportunity for students to engage in creative concert giving and perform for their friends during the noon hour in the Music Library. This form provides the information and application:  Music Library Mid-Day Concert / Recital Series.

June 2011

Along with Grove Music Online (which includes the Grove Dictionary of Music) and the Garland Encyclopedia of Wold Music, UCLA now has access to the Oxford History of Western Music. You can access these on campus or anywhere in the world using the VPN and your UCLA Login.

August 2010

Good news! For the 2010 academic year course reserve material (books and scores and printed articles) will return to the Music Library.

We have a one year trial subscription to the Classical Music Scores Library. A link has been added from the Music Scores and Sheet Music Online page. Currently this database of music scores contains 21,878 titles, many from Universal Edition. AR Editions, and other major publishers. After one year we will evaluate the success of this subscription and if funding is available initiate a permanent subscription.

October 2009

For the Academic Year 2009-2010, books, scores, jornal articles, course readers and other printed material on reserve for classes in Ethnomusicology, Music, and Musicology that would normally be in the Music Library will be located in the Powell Library. DVDs will remain on reserve in the Music Library.

July 2008

Encyclopedia of Popular Music.  The Encyclopedia of Popular Music is now available through Oxford Music Online. Using Oxford Music Online you can cross search Grove Online (which includes the old Jazz Grove) and the popular music encyclopedia. The Encyclopedia of Popular Music is an online and slightly updated version of the one edited by Colin Larkin and on the reference shelves (ML 102.P66 G84 2006).

March 2008

Changes to Grove Online. Grove Online, the New Grove Dictionary of Music, is now Oxford Music Online. Through one web page you can search Grove Music, the Oxford Companion to Music, and the Grove Dictionary of Music.

American Song
A history database that will contain 50,000 tracks that allows people to hear and feel the music from America's past. The database will include songs by and about American Indians, miners, immigrants, slaves, children, pioneers, and cowboys. Currently (March 2008) 835 albums, equaling 14,232 tracks.
